Prayer Campaign for the Institute’s National Shrine

As we now begin Phase II to build the Institute’s National Shrine, our Prior General, Monsignor Gilles Wach, and our Provincial Superior, Canon Matthew Talarico, ask us to pray publicly the Memorare  each day for this important intention: to build the Institute’s National Shrine to Christ the King.

With God, Nothing is Impossible

By the grace of Almighty God and because of your prayers and support, we have succeeded in accomplishing the previously unthinkable.  The Institute’s National Shrine of Christ the King , once a ruin slated for demolition, has been saved, secured and sheltered.  We could not have done this without your help, and on behalf of the Holy Infant King and the entire Institute family: Thank you.

At the gracious invitation of His Excellency David Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, on October 15, 2018, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest assumed responsibility for the pastoral care of the Latin Mass community which has been operating under the direction of the diocese for nearly 30 years.

Canon William Avis, who previously served in the Institute’s apostolates in St. Louis, Kansas City, Oakland and Tucson, was appointed administrator of the quasi-parish, and will be assisted by his vicar, Canon John O’Connor, formerly assigned to the Institute’s apostolate in Limerick, Ireland.

To inaugurate the Institute’s care of the parish, Canon Matthew Talarico, US Provincial Superior of the Institute, and himself a native of Pittsburgh, offered a Solemn High Mass and preached on Sunday, October 21, with Canons Avis and O’Connor serving as deacon and subdeacon. Mass was followed by a reception where the Canons were glad to meet many of their new parishioners, who provided them with a very warm and hospitable welcome.

The Superiors and Canons of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest are most grateful to Bishop Zubik for the invitation to serve in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and look forward to providing for the pastoral care of this new apostolate in the future.

The Sacrament of Confession is now available 30 minutes prior to all Masses, as well as during the Sunday Masses.

There are a number of ways in which members of the parish place their talents at the service of God and the Church, such as the Pueri Cantorum children’s choir, the Gradus Cantorum choir for adolescents and young adults, and the Schola Cantorum adult choir, the service of the sanctuary as an altar boy, or by deepening one’s faith at catechism (currently offered for children in grades K-12 at St. Ambrose Church between the 8am and 11am Masses on Sunday morning).

Other new and exciting activities will be forthcoming under the direction of the Canons of the Institute of Christ the King in the near future.

Until the permanent future location is chosen for the apostolate, Masses will continue to be offered at St. Boniface Church (Holy Wisdom Parish), 2208 East Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, while the Canons are currently in residence at the rectory of Risen Lord Parish.
