Surgite et nolite timere! Arise and fear not!

(From the Gospel for the Feast of the Transfiguration)

About sixty young adults came together this year for the eighth annual Sursum Corda weekend, August 10-13, on the magnificent campus of St Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, IL.

Canon Commins, and Canon Estrada provided spiritual nourishment through daily Mass, confession, and spiritual conferences on such topics as the Liturgy, Holy Scripture, and prayer, with a particular emphasis this year on the different states in life.  Each evening also witnessed the beautiful Office of Compline, during which the retreatants joined enthusiastically with the Canons in singing the Latin psalmody of Holy Mother Church. And for the first time this year, Sunday Solemn Vespers with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Other highlights of the weekend included theology on tap, in which the young men and women proposed many difficult and interesting questions to the Canons, a rosary walk through the woods to the national shrine of St Maximilian Kolbe, followed by an hour of Adoration.  On the final evening of the retreat, the participants shared their many talents through music, skits, and folk dancing.

Each year, the national Sursum Corda retreat sees the formation, or the renewal, of friendships founded on our shared Catholic faith.

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair. (Samuel Ullman)

This was my first time attending Sursum Corda, and it was such a breath of fresh air!  I can’t express how grateful I am for the Canons, their spiritual talks as well as the wonderful like-minded Catholics there! This retreat has really rekindled my Faith and prayer life, with daily Mass, daily Compline, and on the last night a special treat of vespers and benediction! I felt myself come alive again.

With laughter at every turn; some of my favorite memories would be the rosary walk through the woods, ending at St.  Maximilian Kolbe shrine. Dancing under the stars, enjoying everyone’s talent at the talent show, playing games especially reversed Charades and theology on tap!

Don’t hesitate to take a leap of faith and enjoy this breath of fresh air where you make wonderful memories, met amazing people, laugh and grown deeper in your Faith! Maria Garcia- Chicago

"This year's retreat was fantastic as always, with terrific spiritual conferences by the Canons, and daily Mass, Compline, Vespers and good Catholic camaraderie. Taking place on the beautiful grounds of St. Mary of the Lake University, this retreat immerses young Catholics for four days in spiritual direction, nourishes the soul by providing the sacraments every day, and offers an opportunity for young, like-minded Catholics to create good, holy friendships. I hope that more Catholics will come in years to follow and take the opportunity to grow spiritually and make new acquaintances." Edward Shikles- Kansas City
