Corpus Christi in Tucson, AZ

Since the 13th century, Holy Mother Church's calendar has set aside the Thursday after Trinity Sunday for the Feast of Corpus Christi, recalling Holy Thursday when Our Lord instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. This year, on Thursday, June 7, the Holy Father reminded us that this feast renews in Christians the joy and the gratitude for the Eucharistic presence of Jesus when he celebrated this glorious feast in Rome. This first class feast was also celebrated on this date in all Institute apostolates, but St. Gianna Oratory in Tucson, Arizona, had the great honor of having Monsignor Gilles Wach, Prior General of the Institute, as the celebrant on the feast itself.

Since its institution by Pope Urban IV in 1264, the Feast of Corpus Christi has been one of the most resplendent of the feasts after Pentecost, partly because of the customary Eucharistic procession which has come to be associated with this feast. As our present Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI explains in his Corpus Christi homily this year: The sacrament of Christ's Charity must permeate the whole of daily life. The Holy Father tells us that we must make perceptible Jesus' constant presence in our midst and with us, a presence that is tangible, close, in our homes, as the 'beating Heart' of the city, of the country, and of the area.
